After the Storm (Irma)

Poem by Carlos Alvarado

——Silence
Until then
The storm unleashed a tirade
Windswept
Rain pummeled our shelter
Fearfully
We waited a crash of walls
Abruptly
Quiet deafened the darkness

——Stillness
Until light
We sweltered, stripped in bed
Anxious
Hurricane bands would resume
Instead
Palms languished without breeze
Listless
Muggy weather stifled our resolve

——Routine
Strewn
All that had been commonplace
Branches
Laid splintered over roadways
Currents
Lifeless within broken wires
Powerless
The mundane became tedious

——Restore
Recovery
Services, mobilized and engaged
Gradually
Patterns gain their momentum as
Nature’s
Inspiration fades in a mental cocoon
Forgetful
We are entwined to stronger forces
